How We Work

Share Our Strength founded Cooking Matters on a unique model of collaboration between Share Our Strength and local program partners that leverages the strengths of all involved. Share Our Strength provides professional-level curricula and instructional materials, training, evaluation and national leadership support while local program partners provide hands-on, grassroots-level resources, program customizations and relationships that are best addressed on the local level. This collaborative program model makes Cooking Matters uniquely effective, efficient and sustainable among national nonprofit education programs.

Reaching Families Close To Home

Share Our Strength reaches families through franchise-style partnerships with nonprofit organizations or social service agencies that are committed to providing Cooking Matters’s effective brand of chef-led food skills education in their region. Each Cooking Matters program partner works with its network of community organizations that serve as host sites for Cooking Matters classes. In this way, Cooking Matters partners with hundreds of community organizations around the country to reach families close to home.

Educational Outreach

Cooking Matters also offers educational tools and resources that build on the proven success of our signature cooking courses. These resources are particularly useful for supporting educational outreach in communities that aren’t currently being served by an existing Cooking Matters program. Share Our Strength provides turnkey resources, such as our Cooking Matters at the Store interactive, guided grocery store tour, which can easily be used at the local level by community-based volunteers and agencies who are interested in helping low-income families make the most of their food resources.
