Become A Volunteer

We need volunteer culinary and nutrition instructors to teach healthy eating techniques, hands-on cooking skills, and nutrition education to low-income families during 6-week class sessions.  We’re also looking for volunteers to serve as course assistants, grocery shoppers, event planners, interpreters, and administrative helpers.

Where do you fit?

Culinary Instructors:
We’re looking for those who have professional training or experience in the culinary industry as well as some teaching experience.  Alongside the nutrition instructors, our culinary instructors teach the cooking portion of the lessons using the provided Cooking Matters curricula which incorporate tested recipes that use accessible, low-cost, and nutritious ingredients.

Nutrition Instructors:
We’re looking for registered dieticians, nutrition professionals, dietetic interns, and nutrition students, ideally with some teaching experience.  Alongside the culinary instructors, our nutrition instructors use the provided Cooking Matters curricula to teach participants about healthy food choices and different aspects of nutrition based on MyPyramid using activities, handouts, and resources provided by Cooking Matters.

Course Assistants:
This is a great role for new volunteers who want to get some experience in Cooking Matters classes before jumping in to the culinary or nutrition instructor roles or who may not fit into the other two roles.  Our course assistants help divide groceries for participants into take-home bags, assist the culinary instructor in preparing recipes, and help in setting up and cleaning up (including some dishwashing).  A supportive role, the class assistant does not lead the class but is imperative in its success!

Other Volunteer Opportunities:

  • Class Shoppers help shop for the groceries we use at our Cooking Matters classes (funded by Cooking Matters).
  • Interpreters help translate for the educators, participants, and class coordinator when necessary.  Sometimes, we also     need written documents and recipes translated.  Languages include Spanish, Portuguese, and Mandarin.
  • Event Planners help coordinate and volunteer for events including food drives, fundraisers, Share Our Strength’s Taste     of the Nation, and other social events throughout the year.
  • Class Photographers take pictures during our classes for our website and media.
  • Administrative assistants help us in our office in Quincy.
